Live like it’s 1969, In a Missile Silo

By Morgan Mayhew on October 6, 2009

Looking for a new home that’s structurally sound, with loads of floor space and away from the hassles of the city? Then you may want to look into purchasing a missile silo.

Starting as low as $195,000, missile silos are available across the U.S. right now. While buyers won’t have the luxury (or the headache) of having to deal with live nuclear ordinance in their living room as all missiles have been removed, residents can still enjoy the benefits of spacious interiors and the joy of never having to wash a window, as they don’t exist.

The site, MissileBases.com, has 13 listings that are on the market. Properties include hardened communication facilities, Atlas “E” and “F” missile bases, and even a very rare Titan I base.

Of the sites listed, only one has been fully renovated and includes luxury accommodations, an above ground facility and entrance with a “wraparound porch” and even a private airport on 20 acres of land for $2.3.

Other sites are not so comfy. Abandoned for decades, sites in New Mexico and elsewhere have been vandalized to current states of underground graffiti caves.

Several sites have been turned into private residences while others have been converted to secure storage facilities and one Atlas E site has been retrofitted as a high school.

Missile Silo’s could be a tinkerer’s dream-come-true but could also be the tinkerer’s wife’s worst nightmare.
