Flag Shirt Controversy: High School Sponsors Mexican Nationalist Group

Five High School students, wearing t-shirts bearing the American flag on a Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo, were suspended from Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, California.
The students, who were approached by the school’s assistant principal, Miguel Rodriguez, and told to turn their t-shirts inside out, refused the order and as a result, were summoned to the principal’s office and suspended.
The school officials considered their shirts to be “incendiary” and accused the students of attempting to start a fight by wearing patriotic gear as 100 other students expressed their patriotism for Mexico by wearing red, white, and green.
It seems that Live Oak High has much deeper problems with race and culture that are condoned by the school’s administration.
One of the school’s clubs, along side the Chess Club and Drama Guild, is a club called M.E.Ch.A.
MEChA stands for Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (Chicano Student Movement of Aztlán).
According to their national organization’s Web site, MEChA is. . .
Essentially, we are a Chicana and Chicano student movement directly linked to Aztlán. As Chicanas and Chicanos of Aztlán, we are a nationalist movement of Indigenous Gente that lay claim to the land that is ours by birthright. As a nationalist movement we seek to free our people from the exploitation of an oppressive society that occupies our land. Thus, the principle of nationalism serves to preserve the cultural traditions of La Familia de La Raza and promotes our identity as a Chicana/Chicano Gente.
The Mexican Nationalist group is very protective of its members and structures and clearing states when referring to “infiltration”:
. . . we cannot believe in unity for unity's sake since there are many opportunistic organizations, groups, and/or individuals who care only for themselves and not for our people. Just as we would expel FBI or CIA agent provocateurs from our organizations, such opportunistic organizations, groups, and/or individuals must be exposed and expelled to strengthen our Movement.
While Live Oak also sponsors clubs such as the Black Student Union, and the Asian Student Union, those groups foster and “promote activities of common interest” rather than seeking to free their people “from the exploitation of an oppressive society that occupies our land.”

This truly is outrageous. They send boys home for showing American pride in America, while other students celebrate a Mexican holiday in America? Sure, the boys were clearly making a statement, but after reading this, it seems that they are a minority in their own school. And my tax dollars that are funding No Child Left Behind are going to sponsor a racist group like Mecha!?! Arrgh!
Many elementary schools in California mandate students to wear school uniform. In other countries, public high school students even wear uniform. Make them all wear a school uniform. Then no one will stand out and all be equals as far as clothing appearance goes. Problem solved.
This is bs. So America is going to now go back to the mexicans. Mexicans show their pride for Mexico all the time wheather its Cinco de Myo or not. When did america became a Mexican only country? When that happens I think I'll return to where my ancesters came from. At least I know who's running the country. I have no problem with Mexicans supporting Mexico, but for kids to be suppended for supporting America that is BS. Hell Miley Cyrus has a clothing line with the British flag on it . Should be suppened her fans for wearing them to school.
Hell why don't we suspend Africans for wearing their country colors, or Japanese, or Italans. This is becoming such a racist country. I thought we already fought those wars. Go To the FUTURE people and not the past. This is America so why can't we just all get along and not give a shit about what we wear.
I mean for gosh sake my 16 year son was suppended from school for wearing a Dallas Cowboy hat. They said it was gang related. BS BS BS! Everything is now politacally, racially or gang related. So how about we all go nude. And believe me you don't want to see me nude.

So if 4th of July was during the school year would Mexican flag shirts get kids suspended? These kids need to be taught tolerance and acceptance. Mexico is where these kids need to be, it is Mexico that is sooo screwed up no one wants to live there. Most of these kids no nothing about the country they consider "home" even though they were born here. Go "home" and change the system. Stay here and QUIT BITCHING you live in the most generous country on earth! You are entitled to work hard and earn your keep, nothing more.
I wonder if Mr. Rodriguez would take offense to a Mexican school full of American born kids flaunting hundreds of American flags on the day that the battle of Saratoga was won (would never happen but just for the sake of argument).
Taking that into consideration, does what happened at Live Oaks make sense at all? Nope! The only reason it can even happen is because of the Americans that flaunt their own flag in their owns schools and their American Pride ALLOWING Mexican descended children to express their views in their schools.
True Americans would allow anyone to express any national Pride at any time.

What is Cinco de Mayo anyway. It is not a celebration of any revolution or any major event in mexican history i don't beleive.

I fail to see how wearing an American flag shirt on Cinco de Mayo is offensive in any way. The assistant principal needs to read a history book and learn that the Mexicans were fighting the French on the original Cinco de Mayo, not the USA!
It's petty tyranny like this in the public schools that make conservatives turn to homeschooling and/or pushing for voucher programs. Apologies to these students and their families are definitely in order here!
Adam, unfortunately it is the tree hugging liberals which allow this to happen through their naivete. Racism and intolerance should be stopped where ever it is found regardless of race, creed, ethinicity, etc. Many minorities are not really interested in equality but dominance and unfortunately, too many liberals believe only white's are racist and minorities are just misunderstood. It's time to wake up before we become the oppressed we have tried so hard to make our equals.
I do hate that people believe only whites can be racist. I actually went to school in a prodomently Mexican neighborhood where I was the minority. We actually had two other whites in the school as far as I was ever aware of. I never really got to know them that well though because they were not in the same grade as me. I took a Mexico History class in that school and even really enjoyed it. But I was picked on and attacked reguarly. I ended up taking martial arts during that time at a school councilors recommendation. I have never been the type to get into fights but it still helped because I could carry myself better and had more confidence. I ended up asking one of my tormentors why they picked on me so and was told that it was because "I" was racist. I think they miss understood the meaning of racism. It isn't defined by being a white kid.
And it's EXACTLY for this reason amongst others that the Arizona law was enacted. Please remove your blinders from what is occurring in this country.
The Arizona law does nothing that the federal law does. Please don't tell me you are like Obama and didn't read the bill because it says right in the bill that police can not stop someone just because they think they are illegal they can only ask for proof of citizenship if they are stopped for another crime. I think EVERY state should enact this law it's pretty apparent Obama isn't going to do a damn thing about the illegals that are here and continue to come here.
Adam, while this is a bit overboard, it's actually pretty par for the course if you live in California. Illegal imigration is such a big issue in central Cali that you can no longer get a job if you don't speak Spanish (and now that unemployment in some areas are as high as 20% you can imagine how that could add to the issue). In university I took a class where I was the only non Latino (a regular math class).
I've always lived in very multicultural areas, but the takeover of illigals is so evident that you can't help but notice it drive through the central valley. If you've never experienced the total reverse racism that whites deal with in boarder states then the Arizona law might not make sense.
I highly and strongly suggest you read the immigration bill. It is against racial profiling, contrary to what you hear and our "president" implies. We are aginst illegal immigration, period. How could you be for it?
The school didn't suspend them for wearing flag shirts, they suspended them for deliberately inciteful behavior. Imagine wearing a pro-Bush shirt to a gay pride rally.
Should they have let these kids continue to wear their shirts and get their asses kicked by other students? Maybe...It would have preserved their free speech rights and highlighted the racial problems that kids were probably trying to point out.

These boys were peacefully protesting. There has been nothing stated about these boys being outwardly antagonistic, violent, or even incendiary except in their stand to keep their USA gear on when they were being censored by their principal.

I really don't give a damn about hispanics being upset about someone disrespecting a Mexican holiday (that isn't even really celebrated in Mexico). They're also free to disrespect the Fourth of July if they choose. I really don't care. One has to consider these are public schools, paid for by public taxes and with compulsory attendance. A rally, parade or private or public event is a completely different type of gathering.
I went to kindergarten in 1968 ( back when girls had to wear dresses and all) but... what happened to the US Flag in every classroom and the pledge of allegiance to the USA stated every morning before classes start?

That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. Who cares if the kids had on American shirts. Are they trying to say that on an American holiday, everyone that is from somewhere else has to put all the items from their country away in the closet because it might not be favorable. What happened to the CONSTITUTIONAL rights? Just by wearing a shirt and showing where you come from, should not cause a problem. If that is the case then everyone needs to remove all items that represent their heritage from their person, car mirrors and bumpers because it might upset someone.
I don't think any country's flag, other then the AMERICAN FLAG, should be displayed on AMERICAN soil unless it is at an embassy building. I am so sick of hearing how Americans should accept other cultures and bow to other countries. I 100% agree. When the immigrants came through Ellis Island they not only learned English but they worked to join into a new culture and a new way of life. They were grateful to be in this country. You can honor your heritage within your family if you wish but you live in a new country now. Either adjust or move on to another country where you will get the freedoms and the things you get here. Oh yeah...that won't happen in another country. Here in AZ unless you can speak or read spanish you can't even understand the business signs or names. Business are not required to have there signs in English.

I agree 100% with you. I live in Washington State. On my house I have an American flag and Arizona State flag. I truly wish my Governor had the balls to sign a law like in Arizona. I will proudly display both flags on my home-no matter how many times "people" steal them, throw eggs at my home,and yell awful things at me when they drive by.

Wouldn't it be nice if all the Students started wearing shirts with the American Flag. After this even change the school colors to Red, White and Blue. Of course there would have to be a new VP and Principle to allow this. There would be a long list of applications.

If you live in America then the American Flag is YOUR flag if the American flag brings out hatred in you then perhaps you should find a flag that better suits you and move to that country.

Given the choice to change their shirts or go home is a suspension. The only reason it wasn't listed as a suspension is that schools have to keep track of how many suspensions they have. It reflects bad on the administration to have a high number. As a result they have gotten creative and send students home without an official suspension. They had no access to education that day. The school did not get state or federal funding for students attendance for the day. It was a suspension.

Seriously it's the same reason why we celebrate the 4th of July. Independence from England. But we don't celebrate the victory in 1812 but it was when our National Athem was written.....
The only thing racist about any of this is that there are Black student unions, Asian student unions, Mexican student groups, ad nauseum. Until, and unless, there are *no* race related groups at all, there will continue to be racism. And it is exacerbated and prolonged by the very groups who claim to be non-racist. We all arrived here from varying countries, under varying circumstances. We all have the same opportunities to learn and succeed, as long as we are here *legally*! Pride in your heritage is fine. Pride in your heritage, while excluding your fellow Americans, is not fine and will continue to divide this country. If you're here legally, by either heritage or immigration law, then you are, and should behave as, an American. If you don't have pride in America and don't really want what America has to offer, why are you here? And if you're here illegally, go home and come back through the front door.
While Cinco de Mayo sees limited significance and celebration nationwide in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day,the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico. Don't compare Cinco to the 4th of July as one of the offened kids did. He doesn't even know his own heritage. Anyone see the vice-principals name? I think that speaks volumes he was protecting his own.
It is an outrage!!! Under Bush's administration we came together as a nation after 9/11 and we were all proud to wear the American Flag on our shirts, shorts, bathing suits, socks, shoes and even our underwear. Now that Obama is in office it is every man for themselves. Sad! So sad to see our country going down the toilet. I am so glad that my boys will be in private school where they can proudly wear the American Flag and the Christian Cross without being told it is wrong to do so!!!

I would love to ask the Mecha kids just what they would do if they got what they believe is their land back. Do they think that they would still have all the benefits that America has given them? It would be under Mexican rule then. What has Mexico done for their people. It is a lawless Country. Who do they think would pay for their breakfast and lunches. The Mexican government doesn't help the people that live in Mexico so what makes them think that taking over American soil would make any difference.

May 5th is NOT their independence day, which is September 15. And it is mostly celebrated by ONE state in Mexico (where the battle happened) and mostly by Mexicans in the USA. I understand that it was a great victory for Mexico over France, but I think that this date is celebrated more (in the states) than their actual independence. Something is wrong with that.
And the French were powerful at one point. Ever hear of Napoleon? It has only been in the last century or so that they have been Europe's doormat.
One last thing, the Mexican-Americans are upset over American students being patriotic and a flag burning. What colors are on the Mexican-American flag?

While I think the VP was wrong in his actions I also think we are being naive if we think these 5 students had 100% pure intentions. I would be willing to bet they didn't own a single piece of patriotic clothing until they decided on pulling this little coo.

Purity aside, I imagine that the intentions of these boys was to show that they did not care for a Mexican psuedo-holiday being nationally celebrated in America. At the very least it was a silent protest and well within their Constitutional rights. As for their act being considered a "coo," you are sorely mistaken. A coo is either a sound characteristic of pigeons or a manner of speaking with exaggerated admiration. While a "coup" is (1) the sudden violent overthrow of a government and seizure of political power, (2) a success that is unexpected and achieved with exceptional skill, or (3) a feat of bravery during battle, especially touching an enemy warrior without harming him. I think it's safe to go with definition #3.

Are we going to let these things constantly happen without ACTUALLY DOING something to STOP it? Actually - the Flag Code of The United States states that the American flag is not to be worn as a garment in any manner...
§176. Respect for flag

* (k) The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

How can Americans, white, brown, black, yellow, or any other color sit back and permit a student group like this to persist? This group in itself promotes the very thing that "White Pride" groups have been prosecuted for. Imagine a white pride group that established itself in a school. It would be shut down immediately! Now I ask myself a question, why hasn't this Mexican group been shut down? Just because people are Mexican or whatever other nationality, doesn't mean that they are here illegally. Even if they are, it does not make them any less of a HUMAN BEING.
The boys' parents ought to sue for their kids' right to freedom of expression being violated. Really. They could come to school wearing a shirt with a picture of a marijuana leaf on it and could sue if the vice principal told them to turn it inside out. So, an American flag is "inflammatory"? Do you realize that if the border had been drawn 20 miles further south in 1848, Tijuana would now be a resort? And if it had been 20 miles further north, San Diego would be a fetid cesspool like Tijuana or Ciudad Juarez? Take a look at El Centro, parts of L.A. or anywhere else with a large Latino population and it looks like the slums of Mexico City all over again. They come here "for a better life" and then make their life just as bad as what they had before. What's up with that? I want to make up some bumper stickers that say "MEXICO SUCKS!! They say the U.S. "stole" their land, but we paid them $25 million for it -- a lot in 1848 dollars. Maybe they should buy it back, adjusting for inflation and the cost of improvements -- roads, bridges, airports, etc. Somehow I don't think Mexico has that much money. And what would they do with it? Just turn it into another slum?
Besides, my research tells me that "Aztlan" is not the southwest United States at all. It is really an island -- and that island is Japan. So they came over here from Japan a couple of thousand years or so ago. Maybe they can stage their "reconquista" in Japan and see how far they get. I wish they would try.
