Apple sells 1 million iPads Despite Limited Uses

Apple announced that it has surpassed the 1 million mark on iPads sold. The milestone is a big accomplishment considering that the new device has been released only in the United States.

While the iPad is a hot selling item, its limits to use are still being found each day.

  • With very awkward typing, the iPad is not suitable to use as an email client.
  • The iPad is not suitable as an eBook reader as it cannot be easily viewed outdoors due to screen glare
  • Environment is becoming a problem for the iPad as we enter warmer months. The iPad will overheat and shut down if used in direct sunlight even on mild days with temperatures in he 70’s. Cold weather is also a factor
  • With no cameras the iPad cannot be used for video chat or any other type of video or picture use.
  • Students will find that the iPad, despite its notebook size, is not suitable as a hand-written note taker. While various apps offer creative features, writing with one’s finger is difficult and causes very chunky lettering due to Apple’s multi-touch software. Even using a stylus is difficult as a large “finger footprint” is required from a stylus to recognize a touch.
  • Without the “full web” due to Steve Job’s refusal to work with Adobe’s Flash, even the web surfing and applications are limited.
  • While the iPad is a very unique device, it is best used for gathering news and information or as a personal entertainment device.

Apple’s 1 million iPad customers, if they haven’t already, will soon realize that the iPad is no substitute for a laptop or even a netbook.
