Oprah's 'No Phone Zone' Plea to the Little People

By Ann Hunter on April 30, 2010

It has probably been quite some time since talk show queen Oprah Winfrey drove herself to work, but that doesn’t stop her from declaring a “No Phone Zone” day today in efforts to stop what is being referred to as distracted driving.

With the introduction of smart phones, anywhere Internet and relentless texting, multi-tasking while driving is a common occurrence that won’t be doing away anytime soon.

Regardless, Oprah is asking viewers to sign her “No Phone Zone Pledge” which ask signers to choose one of three options to curb distracted driving.

While Oprah’s efforts to stop texting-while-driving are not particularly bad, it’s slightly upsetting to some that a women with a net worth of over $340 million is imposing her view on the rest of us who actually have to wash our own laundry, drive our own cars and answer our own phone calls.

The last time Oprah was spotted while behind the wheel of a car was in 2007 when she parallel parked a new Lexus while hosting her television show – thankfully, no one was hurt during the episode.

When Oprah is in a car, it’s typically driven by a bulky bodyguard with a Bluetooth earpiece buried in his ear - as in the beautifully ironic photo from October of 2009 above.

So far, only 260,007 have signed the pledge.

It’s unknown how many people signed the pledge from their iPhone while driving 90 mph down a residential road and fumbling with the remainders of a Coke Slurpee.
